15-day Hindcast Experiments With The Uncoupled Cice Ice Model

Abstract

The Los Alamos sea ice model (CICE) is being tested in standalone mode before its incorporation into the Next Generation Global Prediction System (NGGPS). Both initial conditions and atmospheric/oceanic forcings during the test phase are from the NCEP Climate Forecast System Version 2 (CFSv2). We are carrying out simulations for 15 days over one whole year. The simulated ice edge and concentration from this global model will be compared with those from an existing ESRL regional ice model (also based on CICE) and various observations. The sensitivity to horizontal resolution used in the model and to various initialization strategies will be discussed.
