Development of An Analysis/forecast Verification Package As An OSSE Joint Verification Effort Within OAR Focused On Improving The Assessment and Communication of The Impact of Observations On NWP Skill

Abstract

One of the goals of the Quantitative Observing System Assessment Program (QOSAP) is to improve Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) skill by maximizing future and current global observations using the Observing System Simulation Experiment (OSSE) and Observing System Experiment (OSE) frameworks. In an effort to enhance the communication and effectiveness of the collaboration between global and regional OSSE efforts within OAR, development of a Joint Verification Effort was initiated. The resulting software package will enable the quick assessment of the impact of observations (e.g., satellite observations) on NWP skill and the communication of this impact both internally and externally. There will be two parts to the package: analysis monitoring and forecast verification. Both parts will use code already available within the broader scientific community, develop new code, and cannibalize available code from other groups within National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The layout and progress of the package will be presented along with a description of how these research efforts will be used to support QOSAP activities.
