This case study presents the challenges and successes involved with constructing a new data center in the basement of the David Skaggs Research Center in Boulder, Colo. This new data center is designed to house a portion of NOAA’s newest research and development high performance computer system. The presentation will describe the process of design, construction and commissioning, which occurred simultaneously with a federal procurement of the next generation research supercomputer. The resulting data center is able to accommodate high density systems and adapt to new system upgrades on an 18-month recurring schedule. The design ultimately resulted in numerous magazine articles as well as a Golden Hard Hat award for mechanical and electrical design from Colorado construction magazine.
