Determination of Temporal and Spatial Characteristics of Atmospheric Gravity Waves Combining Cross-spectral Analysis and Wavelet Transformation

Abstract

[1] In combining cross-spectral analysis and wavelet transformation we demonstrate how temporal and spatial characteristics of atmospheric gravity waves can be extracted from observed winds and potential temperature. Applying this method to aircraft observational data, we are able to reconstruct a spectrum of high-frequency monochromatic gravity waves, which demonstrate many localized features such as wave growth, dissipation, and interaction.}
