Nextgen 4-D Weather Data Cube Development and Tools For Content Developers

Abstract

The Information Technology (IT) architecture, data services and standards continue to be a critical component of the NextGen 4-D Weather Data Cube. As part of the NextGen Network Enabled Weather (NNEW) program, Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Specifications have been extended to develop services to web enable and geo-locate data. Current development at NOAA's Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL) is leveraging this work creating a freely available Web Feature Service (WFS) as well as exploring other OGC services, including the Web Mapping Service (WMS) and Sensor Observing Service (SOS) as other methods of providing data to the 4-D Weather Data Cube. Additionally, ESRL has created Virtual Machine (VM) development environment where these services are installed and maintained within a VM container assisting data providers in deploying these services to make their content available to the 4-D Weather Data Cube. By using a VM container, ESRL has reduced the complexity of installing and setting up 4-D Weather Cube services and provides and easier upgrade path when new versions of the services are made available. This presentation will describe the state of this implementation and future development plans.
